You Said We Did

Fairplay North Youth Intervention Project

Neighbourhood officers based at York Road continue their work with hard to reach young people from the New Lodge and Tigers Bay areas.  Fairplay North project aims to increase engagement with high risk offences and young people involved in ASB and interface violence.  This youth intervention programme which is a partnership supported by a wide range of youth groups is aimed to provide a network of support, increasing positive engagement and building better relationships.

In recent months work with Rathbone in the New Lodge area has proven successful with 7 young people now engaging with police and a number of meetings have taken place with a full programme planned for the coming months.  All the young people involved in the project have not offended in the area and neighbourhood officers are receiving excellent community feedback regarding the reduction of involvement in antisocial behaviour.  It is hoped that more young people within this hard to reach group will become involved with a further 4 persons already expressing an interest in becoming involved.

Further positive work has been achieved in the Tigers Bay area with 10 young people who were particularly involved in interface violence now engaging with Rathbone, neighbourhood officers and BELB youth workers and participating in weekly meetings.  Further to this one youth has received extensive intervention in recent months involving social services and youth workers.

Newington Antisocial Behaviour

York Road neighbourhood officers have been working in partnership with youth workers from Tar Isteach Centre as part of on going engagement with young people in the Newington area with the aim of tackling antisocial behaviour.   In recent months a number of group sessions have taken place, with 2 young persons entering into antisocial behaviour contracts.  A number of diversionary activities have taken place including a residential aimed to build relationships between police and young people and develop a better understanding of the difficult issues faced by young people in the area.

Active Communities Support

Neighbourhood Officers based at York Road have been working with young people, aiming to support them in moving away from antisocial activities and gang culture which for some can create the feeling of anti-community and youth centre rejection.  Active Communities, a charitable organisation which uses sport, art and cultural activities to improve community and social unity are supporting this initiative with the aim to get young people back to local events and youth clubs.  Work is currently

Officers have been promoting Limestone United as a positive model of development, in which over 25 young people are now involved with various events such as a visit to the Bogside area of Foyle, and cross community football events to develop and promote contact between young people across the community.  It is anticipated that the “Junior” team currently being established will work along side their peers as role models to encourage positive engagement in diversionary activities.

Mount Vernon Development

Officers based at York Road with responsibility for the Mount Vernon area continue to work with members of the local community to improve relationships and increase engagement.  Initiatives such as the Diversity Awareness project, has helped to create a basis for improving and enhancing our ability to deliver policing in the area. Enabling us to increase neighbourhood police presence and encouraging a greater exchange of information relating to community concerns.

Response officers working in the area recently received a guided tour from local representatives with the aim of increasing engagement and developing knowledge and understanding of community issues.  This opportunity has been a positive step towards increased partnership between community representatives and police and allowing greater involvement of Response officers in community policing.

Cavehill Road Antisocial Behaviour

In response to the upsurge of antisocial behaviour in the Cavehill area, neighbourhood officers based at Antrim Road have been working with Belfast City Council performing joint antisocial behaviour operations throughout the Cavehill Road/Sunningdale area and engaging with local residents.

The introduction of a youth club is being explored, a number of diversionary activities have taken place in recent months including a Pizza with Peelers night during March 2012 when 11 young people were given a tour of Antrim Road Station, followed by a presentation on gun and knife crime.  The young people were then able to chat with neighbourhood officers in a question and answer session over pizza.  The event provided an opportunity to get to know the young people in an informal environment to learn about the issues they face.

Tigers Bay Community Police Drop In

York Road neighbourhood officers have been working with members of the local community to develop a drop in centre, with the aim to increase engagement with the local community and making officers more accessible.  This initiative was launched on Tuesday 3rd April 2012 at the community centre at Mervue Street and will take place on a weekly basis.  Local neighbourhood officers will be available from 1300-1500 hrs, it is hoped this will prove to be a good opportunity to meet with members of the community to discuss community concerns and provide crime prevention advice.

Hazelwood Integrated College Multi-Cultural Awareness

Neighbourhood officers based at York Road have been working with Year 11 pupils at Hazelwood Integrated College on a Hate Crime project. This is a year long project aimed to increase awareness and knowledge of multi cultural communities, which has been designed by the College as part of the student curriculum.  Local officers have hosted a visit to the local police station and a public order familiarisation day.

Plans are underway for officers to attend the school to provide information on hate crime and hold a question and answer session with the students.  These activities allow young people to learn and develop a better awareness of other cultures and issues they encounter, but also present an opportunity for officers to engage and develop positive relationships with young people.

Neighbourhood Watch

Officers with responsibility for the York Road area continue to work closely with local Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators to keep them appraised of any issues of mutual concern regarding criminal activity and to ensure that key crime prevention messages are communicated to residents throughout the area.

Domestic Abuse Update

The Domestic Abuse Unit continues to attend the Multi Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC) Operational group which allows discussion of practice and practice issues and the sharing of information aimed to promote consistent good working practices.  Officers have also been in attendance at the Domestic violence Partnership which aims to increase awareness and reduce incidents of Domestic Violence.  The website for this partnership can be viewed at www.belfastdvp.co.uk which has many links to supportive groups and agencies.

A review of working practices within the Domestic Violence Unit has been conducted and plans are underway to create a more investigative aspect to the Domestic Abuse office from April 2012.  It is anticipated the changes will assist local officers to improve the service they deliver by providing both support to victims of domestic crimes and targeting high risk offenders.

A District has referred 272 victims through the MARAC process between April 2011 and March 2012.

Domestic Violence Awareness Presentation

On 9th March 2012 a Domestic Abuse Officer attended Belfast Metropolitan College alongside our Women’s Aid representative who is attached to the A District Domestic Abuse office.  A presentation was given to student social workers on the role of both the Domestic Abuse Unit and Women’s Aid which provided the students with an opportunity to gain insight into the different roles, responsibilities and provisions of a multi agency approach to tackling domestic violence.
