Information Assurance Unit

Policing relies heavily on information-led activity.  The Police Service of Northern Ireland has strong information assurance (IA) structures and processes in place to ensure secure storage, processing and disposal of information.

The Information Assurance Unit seeks to continually improve processes.  We support the business need for assured information sharing and assist in implementing the risk management programme.

The unit actively reviews and reports on threats, vulnerabilities and risks to PSNI information, to inform business decision-making.  PSNI Information Assurance complies with the HMG Security Policy Framework and the ACPO / ACPOS Information Systems Community Security Policy.

Information Assurance priorities

  • Demonstrate the Police Service’s duty of care to the public to safeguard personal and sensitive data, through accountable corporate governance processes, effective incident management and visible reporting mechanisms.
  • Contribute to successful crime investigation by enabling assured data sharing within the criminal justice and national intelligence communities.
  • Improve business effectiveness and efficiency by initiating a flow of security risk information to decision makers.  This will promote more effective management of critical information assets, to maximise business benefits while balancing risk.
  • Embed Information Assurance into the culture of the organisation to create continuous improvement processes.
