Reliability of Evidence
All cameras used by the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Safety Camera Scheme are approved by the Home Office and area regularly calibrated in line with Home Office guidelines.
All cameras have to be tested and approved under the provisions of Article 23 of the Road Traffic Offenders (Northern Ireland) Order 1996, before they can be used for traffic law enforcement.
To obtain type approval, the equipment is subject to rigorous testing by the police and to standards set by the Home Office Police Scientific Development Branch.
Human Rights Act
In keeping with the Human Rights Act 2000, the registered keeper of a vehicle can be required to give the details of who was driving at the time the vehicle was speeding. This is not a breach of the individual’s rights to a fair trial.
