Crime Prevention

Police in Downpatrick are urging residents to be aware of the risk of property theft and, in particular, of wheelie bins from residential and business properties.  While property owners may not view wheelie bins as valuable property they can be expensive to replace if stolen.

The following steps can be taken to ensure your property is kept safe:

  • Bring your wheelie bin in as soon as you can after it has been emptied.
  • If your neighbours are out at work all day, put their bin on to their property, don't leave it on the street.  A bin sitting on the street at lunchtime may indicate that your neighbour's house is vacant.  This in turn may attract criminals to the area where you live.
  • Engrave your postcode and house number into the plastic on the lid and side of your bin.  If you paint a mark or use stickers these can be easily removed.
  • Keep your bin out of sight behind a locked gate.
