Midnight Street Soccer for youths  view

Killyleagh &Down Area

Local NPT officers are working in these areas to increase their engagement with young people. It is hoped this is a way to break down any barriers or perceptions the youth have of police and also for the youth to discuss with police how they are perceived.

Langley Road Community Group

On 13th October 2011, a six month initiative in partnership with Down Community Safety Partnership began. The initiative, aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour and improving the area for residents commenced with a very successful cross-community "Pizza with a Peeler night and cage football". There will continue to be a series of events held throughout the six month period, the latest being a Country Tea Dance to be held in December.

Anti - Social Behaviour Committee:

This committee sits at Down District Council and affords all interested parties the opportunity to share information about issues affecting local communities in the Down Area.  This is a multi - agency approach to problem solving.

Down Youth (DYIAG):

This group of young persons meet on a monthly basis.  Police attend to listen to the issues these young people feel is of interest to their age groups.  A work shop is being held by the group shortly and letters were recently sent to local schools inviting young people to attend and have their concerns addressed in relation to stereo-typing of young persons.

Down District Suicide Awareness Group -

The Hub:  This is a recently formed group.  The chairperson requested police representation on the committee to voice their views on the topics discussed.

Alternatively you can pop in and visit us in our newly acquired mobile Police station which provides us with a facility to speak to you in private about any concerns you may have.  The mobile station also has an extensive selection of information leaflets in relation to crime prevention, drug awareness and road safety to name but a few.  If we can not help we will direct you to other agencies who will be in a position to help.

We Did

Anti-social driving in The Square, Crossgar. We have increased high visibility patrols in the area and have been working with local councillors and DRD to address these problems.  This includes the re-designing of the car park.  Neighbourhood officers have also been working closely on joint operations with the Driver and Vehicle Agency Enforcement office .Throughout this coming year Police will be carrying out Traffic Operations alongside Road Policing Officers, as we have received an increase in the number of complaints from members of the public.

Anti-social behaviour and under-age drinking in Ballynahinch. We are working with local councillors and enforcement officers to address these problems and have dedicated officers at weekends patrolling the areas identified as Hot Spots. As well as conducting regular Licensed Premises Inspections to challenge youths believed to be under-age.  In addition, we are working with Down District Community Partnership and residents associations on projects to divert youths from this behaviour.

Criminal Damage and Under-age Drinking in the Quay area of KillyleaghWe placed additional resources in the area at weekends, with high visibility beats to deter under-age drinkers.  We held a public meeting for residents of the area to voice their concerns and conducted door to door enquiries and leaflet drops in relation to the damage to the Quay area.  To date this initiative has proved successful.  In addition we are working with other partners to divert youths from this behaviour.

Young People have nothing to do

The young people  in the Killyleagh area stated there was nothing for them to do.  NPT officers have arranged Cage soccer.  This is a way to develop young peoples skills and also to encourage and develop new relationships with police.  There is now a drop in centre in Killyleagh which the Police help to fund.  It provides work shops and play time for all sections of the community. To view details click on view at Midnight soccer above.

More police on the beat

Members of the public always want to see more police on the beat.  In order to address this issue Rowallane NPT team will be placing the mobile Police Station in the rural areas and using cycle patrols to give reassurance to those in these areas.
