Equality and diversity initiatives
We strive to ensure our workforce not only reflects the community it serves but is also capable of meeting its needs. We have a number of initiatives to promote equality and diversity.
Gender Action Plan
The Gender Action Plan exists to help deliver a Police Service which both men and women experience as progressive and professional. A flexible approach to deployment meets the needs of the community while ensuring the needs of individuals are considered. The plan also assists the Police Service in contributing to the Shared Future Strategy, which seeks to promote equality, diversity and good relations.

Disability Action Plan
In developing our Disability Action Plan we consulted widely with disabled staff and members of the public to see the best way in which policing can be delivered.
As a public authority we have a duty under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 to:
- Promote positive attitudes towards disabled people and
- Encourage participation by disabled people in public life
We believe that to promote positive attitudes towards disabled people we must remove attitudinal and environmental barriers. Everyone has a responsibility in creating a productive environment where people can be themselves and fulfil their potential.
The Disability Action Plan focuses on five key areas to help secure improvements and change attitudes. These are:
- Allocating resources to implement the Disability Action Plan
- Develop disability awareness training
- Actions to promote positive attitudes towards disabled people
- Encouraging participation by disabled people in public life
- Develop effective communication strategies

Shared Future Strategy
The Shared Future Strategy is the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s strategic framework for the promotion of Equality, Diversity, Good Relations and Building Trust.
We seek to ensure everything we do is underpinned with fairness and respect. The Shared Future Strategy outlines a plan for meeting this aim through:
- Ensuring equality
- Promoting diversity
- Contributing to bettering relations between different groups in our society
- Contributing to building trust between all, especially the two main communities in our society
