Role of a police officer

All new officers undertake the role of Beat and Patrol Constable.  As the face of the Police Service of Northern Ireland they provide professional, competent core-policing services to the community.

Daily challenges require Beat and Patrol Constables to perform many different roles from diplomat to impartial referee, counsellor to authority figure.  Typical activities include:

  • Attending road traffic collisions
  • Responding to calls from the public
  • Dealing with victims of crime
  • Responding to serious public disorder incidents
  • Arresting offenders
  • Completing related paperwork
