Vehicle Security

Even though vehicle theft is common let us show you how you can prevent it happening to you.

Cars

  • Lock the doors, close the windows and sunroof when you leave the car unattended.
  • Never leave anything on display and remove the stereo, if you can.
  • Remove satellite navigation devices where possible, including the holder and suction pad.
    • Remember to wipe away any suction pad marks left on the windscreen or dashboard.
  • Tuck in wing mirrors and put down the aerial to discourage vandals.
  • Never store your vehicle’s documents in the car.
  • Use a Thatcham-compliant immobiliser or steering lock to secure older vehicles.
  • Keep your car keys out of sight, even in your house, so that if your house is broken into they cannot steal your car too.

Motorbikes

  • Always lock your bike and set the alarm, if it has one.
  • If you are leaving your bike for some time, lock it to something secure.
  • Fit special attachments to lock your bike when you are at home.
  • Have the vehicle marked with its vehicle identification number.

Bicycles

  • Always lock your bike and avoid parking it in isolated or dimly lit places.
  • Invest in a good bike lock.

  • Lock your bike to an immovable object such as lampposts or railings.
  • Secure removable parts such as wheels, or take smaller parts with you, for example lights and quick release saddles.
  • Get your bike security marked, labelled or engraved.
  • Keep a record of your bike including:
    • Make
    • Type and colour frame number
    • Frame (type and size)
    • Tyres (type and size)
    • Fitted accessories
