Lisburn Rural

Lisburn Rural Neighbourhood team is managed by Inspector Shaw, based at Hillsborough Police station.  The team is responsible for policing the Moira and Hillsborough policing areas. The team covers the following villages and surrounding areas: - Moira, Aghalee,Maghaberry, Ballinderry Upper and Lower, Glenavy, Dundrod,  Stoneyford, Hillsborough, Maze, Culcavy, Annahilt, Dromara, Temple, Ravernet and Drumbo. Safety CalenderOn the 1st December 2011 Lisburn Rural NPT and Hillsborough CPLC in partnership with Lisburn DPP will be launching a Safety Calender based on 12 monthly themes.  This will involve crime prevention, road safety and anti social behaviour.  Distribution will then follow to over 2500 homes by Hillsborough CPLC members.

 
High Visibility Beat PatrolLisburn Rural NPT carry out a high visibility beat patrol in Dromara Village on Wednesday evenings from 7pm.  This provides an opportunity for the community to engage with officers in the village.

 
Variable Message SignThe Rural Team will be posting Crime Prevention messages on the variable message sign over the next three weeks.

Infotainment Event

On Tuesday 20th March 2012 Moira NPT in association with Moira CPLC held an Infotainment Event in St Aidans hall, Glenavy.  Over 80 local residents attended the event which included singing from Lynn McAllister and songs from the West End shows.  Two short sketches on home and personal safety were delivered by Comedy artist Stephen and Brian.  The humorous sketches highlighted issues regarding elderly and vulnerable people's security which proved to successfully show how easy people can be conned by Bogus Callers.  Constable Willie Johnston Moira NPT spoke after each sketch on the steps people should take to protect themselves against becoming a victim of this type of crime.

Anti-Social behaviour was occurring within the grounds of Hillsborough Fort.Raised the profile of the problem via local press , utilised police portable variable message signs , highlighting the issue within the local community. Added additional patrols to the area at key times & reported 6-8 persons to the youth diversion officer. This has resulted in no further reports or incidents.

Langtry Neighbourhood Watch Scheme  asked that Crime Prevention Advise to be provided to Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators.

Held a meeting of coordinators at Moira Police station and provided security advice. Individual security assessments of homes in the area to be given when required.

Langtry Neighbourhood Watch Scheme said that motorists are speeding along the Blackwoods Road.

Conducted a number of speed checks and enforcements of the speed regulations in the area.
Lower Ballinderry Neighbourhood Watch Scheme asked that Crime Prevention Advise to be provided to all persons involved in the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme
Organised a public meeting which was held at Ballinderry Primary School on 8th March 2012. Approximately 35 persons from the local area attended and received crime prevention advice from the District crime prevention officer - Michael Green. Individual security of homes could further be requested if required.


Anti-social behaviour was an issue in Hillsborough Forest Created the first Forest watch scheme in Northern Ireland with a Press / Media launch and distribution of Forest watch leaflets to 1800 homes in the area and to local business outlets. The scheme will involve local volunteers . To date no more incidents of ASB have been reported to police.

Criminal Damage was an issue at Hillsborough Forest ParkArranged meetings with Forestry service and community reps in an effort to address. Increased police patrols at identified times and appealed for Information via local press and community safety network. Neighbourhood Police are continuing in their efforts to identify those persons involved and would appeal for anyone with information to get in touch on 02892600917.

Dundrod and District Residents Association complained about motorists on mobile phones at the Dundrod Corssroads.Monitored the junction and took appropriate action against offending motorists.

Burglary was a concern within the community.

Worked in partnership with Hillsborough Community Police Liaison Committee , Local Neighbourhood Watch Co-Ordinators , Roads service, Lisburn City Council , Safer Lisburn & Lisburn District policing partnership to promote the PSNI Community Safety Network (CSN) by erection & placement of information signage that the scheme was active in identified / agreed areas.

Also we designed an information leaflet/card for households identified during police anti-burglary patrols alerting them to take precautions in an effort to prevent them becoming a victim.

Elderly Vulnerable Residents in the Moira area

On the 27th September Police in partnership with Moira CPLC and Safer Lisburn, Lisburn DPP held the first of two information events in St Johns Parish Hall.  Over 120 local people attended and were provided with musical entertainment and two short sketches by amateur dramatic performers on the subjects of personal and home safety.  The event was deemed to be informative and a successful method of giving security advice against Rogue Traders and Burglaries.

Burglary and Rural Thefts

At recent community meetings in Hillsborough, Maghaberry, Aghalee and Dundrod issues in relation to burglary and rural thefts were raised.

As a result additional anti burglary patrols resulted in three arrests. Deployments of the Police Variable Message Signs in the following area, Hillsborough, Annahilt, Drumlough and Dundrod on main roads to prevent these incidents occurring

Arranged and completed two trailer marking community days in partnership with the National Farmers Union (NFU), Lisburn District Policing Partnership, Traka and Datatag UK.  Marking has been completed with over seventy trailers registered with a further date and venue.  Trailer Marking Leaflet

Leaflet/Letter, Text and E-Mail distribution completed for the above by NFU to 1000 homes etc.

Speeding Hillsborough Area

At a Lisburn District Policing Partnership meeting held in Hillsborough on the 15th November 2011 the community raised issues over speeding in Halftown, Culcavy, Lisburn and Dromore Road areas of Hillsborough.  Police have detected a total of 87 motorists for speeding on Halftown and Culcavy Roads in the last 4 weeks.  Further speed operations will be completed over the incoming weeks and will form part of the Christmas Operation Roadsafe.

Speeding was an Issue in Ravarnet

Liaised with traffic management to identify speeding trends at key times. Arranged for speed signage to be considered for replacement and upgrading along with other recommendations. Other options to detect speeding motorists are also being considered in an effort to address community concerns/complaints.

At present Hillsborough Neighbourhood Policing Team actively engage with the following community and CPLC groupings.

Halftown Residents Association – We are actively engaged in reducing and assisting with identified road safety issues along with youth related issues to address anti social behaviour, under aged drinking and other youth related matters through educational and awareness programs. Hillsborough Community Police Liaison Committee – We are actively engaged in addressing key issues impacting directly on a day to day basis throughout the Hillsborough community by partnership exercises and initiatives. This has resulted in the creation of three sub groups.

1. Community Safety – Presently developing expansion of the Neighbourhood Watch. Creation of a Forest Watch Scheme and also Infotainment for the elderly and vulnerable.

2. Road Safety and Traffic – Presently developing portable signage for use at local schools in relation to speed reduction.

3. Youth Engagement – Annual inter schools Soccer competition and educational programmes re anti social behaviour.

Glenavy Development Partnership/Community Association: - We engage with the group on a regular basis to address issues within the village of Glenavy. The village also has another focused group The Glenavy Youth Project which is very active in working with the youth in the village at the new Youth centre at St Aidans.

Moira PSNI attended the Glenavy Development Partnership AGM on the 19th October at the Methodist Hall, Main Street, Glenavy.  There were no actions raised in terms of Policing issues in the village and it was commented on the reduction in Anti-Social Behaviour.  Moira PSNI were thanked for their efforts and the support of the local Community.
