Rural West

The Rural West Neighbourhood Policing Team comprises myself supported by four Constables and four Part Time Constables. We are responsible for 6 beat areas within the Rural West area. The 6 beat areas are similar to council wards and are divided into the two distinctive neighbourhoods, Keady/Derrynoose/Carriackatuke and Killylea/Charlemont/Ballymartrim.

We Did

Horses in the Darkley areaIn February 2012 we attended a public meeting together with local councillors to discuss the problem of horses being left in the Mountain Lodge Road area.  A press appeal has been made and we continue to liaise with the Forestry Service in tackling the problem.  We have also requested an increase in road signage to alert drivers.

Theft of oil and other suspicious activity at Places of Worship

Armagh Rural West Neighbourhood Police Team is seeking to launch a Church-Police initiative in response to the recent increase in metal thefts from church properties, as well as other crimes against places of worship and crimes against their congregations.

The primary aims of this initiative are to help reduce crime against places of worship and to help reduce crime and the fear of crime within the community. We also want to establish better communication links between police and the churches in our area and to foster good relationships between police and the local congregations.

There has been an increase in thefts of agricultural machinery / trailers / quad bikes in rural areas..

We are hoping to commence a trailer marking service in the forthcoming weeks.  For more information please contact us on the above numbers.

Police would encourage owners of such plant to consider adequately marking their property to prevent it from being stolen and to assist in its return to the rightful owner. Please refer to the linked web site for more information on CESAR - www.Pirtek.co.uk

Problem has been highlighted of ‘boy racers’ messing about in cars in the area of Middletown. We have continued to actively patrol hotspots at peak times and conduct speed enforcement operations.  We have consulted with DRD and as a result of the consultation are planning to conduct a traffic survey with a view to implementing traffic calming measures.

Anti-social behaviour in the Glen area of Keady

We increased the number of visible patrols and targeted areas where complaints had been received.  We have met with local residents who are having ongoing problems.  It is planned as part of regeneration of the area for the Glen area to be adequately fenced and gated.

Residents highlighted the issues of speeding motorists in Keady and in particular Victoria St/Darkley Road and Armagh Road

The Team have paid particular attention to these areas and have conducted speed enforcement measures within the 30mph speed restriction.

We have met with DRD Roads Service to look at the road layout at the Roundabout between Darkley Road and Victoria Street, Keady which they are currently considering.  The 30mph zone has been extended further along the Darkley Road.

New Neighbourhood Watch schemes in Rural West. 22 new schemes set up in the Keady area. The Neighbourhood Policing Team has identified further areas suitable for schemes and will progress applications

There have been an increase in the number thefts of scrap metal particularly copper products and lead from domestic properties and rural farmsArmagh Rural West Team established Scrap Dealer Text Alert Scheme. Police Officers have visited local registered scrap dealers who have signed up to the scheme and who receive text messages alerting them of incidents of thefts of scarp and what to be on the look out for.

The number of road traffic collisions on Keady Road / Armagh Road.High visibility patrolling at appropriate times. Education of motorists. Liaison with the DRD Roads Service. We will continue to monitor the issue.
