Brownlow

Brownlow was designed as the ‘New City’. It was part Of Prime Minister O’Neill’s vision of a modern Northern Ireland and a product of the 1960’s era of town planning, which includes recreation zones, mixed housing, cycle paths and roundabouts. Black paths interlink the area and a person can travel from one end to the other without using a road.

More recently Brownlow has a large number of integrated housing estates and new build developments, all of which are owner occupied, private rentals or housing executive. It incorporates several schools, and a number of places of worship. It has its own health centre, library and recreation centres and has one of the province’s biggest retail shopping centres in Rushmere. There are also minor shopping centres at Drumgor, Tullygally and Moyraverty.

We Did

The issue of anti social behaviour, although significantly reduced, was still causing some concern particularly on the black paths, underpasses and in the Drumgor area. The Neighbourhood Team continues with high visibility patrols in vehicles, on bicycles and on foot in these areas.  On Saturday 17 March 2012 there were 2 people reported to the PPS for Disorderly Behaviour in addition to 2 people dealt with for Indecent Behaviour.  The Team continue to identify and focus on areas of concern which are highlighted to us, targetting anti social behaviour and consumption of alcohol.

Continued concerns about recent heating oil thefts. The work around this continues and the team are liaising with Oil Delivery Companies exploring crime prevention options.  In addition the team are commencing a monthly Drop In Clinic at the Legahory Health Centre on 28 March 2012 which will have leaflets and advice on how to secure your property including cable tie / locking your oil tanks.

Continued use of scramblers in public areas causing a danger on the black paths and damage to land.

The Neighbourhood Team continue in their efforts to tackle this issue with education and enforcement.  We have published advice and appeals for information in the local press and it regularly appears on our Facebook page.

We are specifically requesting local residents to contact police if they have any information as to who is riding these scramblers, where they are coming from / going to, any patterns to help us target this issue, before someone is seriously injured or killed.
