| Motoring Legislation | On 24th February 2012, Neighbourhood Police officers in Kilkeel met with local foreign nationals which was facilitated by Challenge of Change from Newry, who provided 3 different interpreters to facilitate the meeting. This meeting was a meet and greet between local foreign nationals and the local Police and gave them a chance to ask Police any questions they had, particularly around our motoring legislation. | |
| There were several unlicensed premises selling alcohol in the Kilkeel and Annalong area | We obtained warrants, searched premises and seized several hundred items of alcohol and reported approximately 40 persons were reported to the PPS | |
| In one residential area you reported noisy drunken parties and anti social behaviour. | Officers patrolled the area and identified those involved and have spoken with them directly. These incidents have ceased. | |
| Drugs are being supplied in the town. | We have used our powers of stop and search and premises search under the Misuse of Drugs Act, and reported several persons for possession and supply offences. Recently E District Crime Team confiscated £75,000 of cannabis, arrested and charged a suspect. NPT officer are using new equipment to detect drugs. This work is ongoing. | |
| Thefts from static caravans sites | Set up the ‘Caravan Watch Scheme’ in all caravan sites in South Down. The scheme involved leaflet drops at all sites informing owners of security advice for their property. Each site was provided with property marking sets to mark and identify valuable property and ‘Caravan Watch’ signs are to be erected in the sites ready for the new season. | Residents of Rooney Park, had feelings of vulnerability following the shooting incident which occurred in April this year. | Met with local residents and with a joint approach involving the Community Safety Partnership, instigated the setting up of a new ‘Neighbourhood Watch Scheme’ which is currently undergoing accreditation. |
|
| Youths were causing annoyance in the Main Street area of Annalong | Due to reports from local residents of antisocial behaviour in the Main Street/Harbour area, we identified a group of youths who congregate around the lazy wall/harbour area of Annalong. These youths had not committed any offences however their presence was causing alarm and distress to residents. With money secured from the Community Safety Partnership we, along with Lower Mourne Community Initiative, secured the services of Life Adventure Outdoor Training (based at the Cormill Centre, Annalong) and put together a programme of outdoor and indoor events to help us engage and educate these young people. There were 12 places on the course (which will run for six weeks). Six places were allocated to youths from local GAA and youth clubs and six to youths who were congregating in the lazy wall/harbour area. The course has now begun (last week saw the group wet bouldering at Bloody Bridge). All youths are getting on well together and we hope that this course will help to increase their self esteem and respect for others and help to prevent them from becoming involved in antisocial behaviour. |

| Theft of heating oil | On 21st February 2012, Neighbourhood Police officers in Warrenpoint conducted a leaflet drop in every house in Gannaway, Warrenpoint after a recent spate of oil thefts. These leaflets provided information on 'How to protect your heating oil'. | |
| There were groups of youths congregating and drinking near elderly residents causing annoyance. | Officers patrolled at the times stated, met residents and local representatives to discuss the problem on site. We spoke with NIHE regarding several residents nearby believed involved as a solution requires multi agency involvement. Complaints have reduced but officers continue to monitor the area. | |
| There is an onus on Police to improve communication with the local community and we need to know our local community beat officers | The Neighbourhood Policing Team are developing closer working relationships with the community with an increase of 17 new Neighbourhood Watch Schemes. This allows the community to work in partnership with the Police to make their areas safer and allows them to have a direct impact and voice on the policing of their area | |
| CASE Officers in the school were carrying out good work and becoming involved with local children. This work should continue and be built upon in the community | The Neighbourhood Policing Team are building upon this good work by increasing our engagement with juveniles through community events such as the recent cage football days at Warrenpoint football club, St Peters GAA and at Carrickbawn Park, Rostrevor. | |
There are known hotspots that are continually the target of anti social behaviour. | In addition to enforcement at hotspot locations we are developing sustainable solutions for the long term. We are working with partner agencies to design out some of the problems by making changes to the architectural layout of areas. We are also working at local level with residents to counter degeneration of areas by helping to promote civic pride through clean up operations in conjunction with TIDY NI. |
|
Tackling the supply of drugs | Police conducted searches in the Rostrevor area and discovered a sophisticated cannabis factory operating. A quantity of drugs with an approximate street value of £210,000 including 70 mature cannabis plants were recovered. Two persons were arrested and have been charged to Newry Magistrates Court regarding seperate offences of drug supply/cultivation/possession, abstraction of electricity, and animal cruelty. We continue to urge people to assist us in helping to detect this sort of crime so we can take appropriate measures to bring these people before the the Courts. |
|
| Complaints regarding anti social behaviour | Alternative methods to deal with ASB - Local Neighbourhood Policing Officers have been working with Neighbourhood Watch coordinators in Rostrevor in a joint enterprise of diversionary activities for juveniles in the area. With the help of the Community and Safety Partnership we were successful in securing funding to run a series of Friday night soccer events at Warrenpoint Town Football Club. We feel it is important to work with the community to help engage with juveniles, diverting them away from becoming involved with anti social behaviour or crime. |
|
Community concern over burglary | The Neighbourhood Policing Team are committed to working in partnership with our Neighbourhood Watch schemes to make our area a safer and more peaceful area to live. We are concious of community concerns over burglary so we have been successful in a funding application through the PSNI Assets Recovery Unit to purchase property marking equipment for distribution to every household within our Neighbourhood Watch schemes as part of an effective crime reduction/prevention strategy. |
