St Patrick’s Day Disturbances, Holylands, South Belfast

18 Mar 2009

As of 7:00am this morning (Wednesday 18 March) 19 people have been arrested due to the disturbances in the Holyland area last night.  Eleven remain in custody and of these five have been charged with public order offences and will appear at Laganside Magistrate Court this morning.  Two officers received non-life threatening injuries.

As is normal procedure the charges will be reviewed by the PPS.

In terms of the parade itself Superintendent Chris Noble praised the participants and spectators alike,  “The parade in Belfast was overall a very enjoyable event and is a welcome sign of the changing times.  There were only two seizures of alcohol and no arrests during the event.  I would congratulate all involved,” he said.
