Police donate boats to aid local rescue efforts

24 Apr 2009

The Police Service has donated four of its boats to assist in local community search and rescue operations.

The boats have been donated to the Community Rescue Services based in Carlingford and Bann, Lough Neagh Search and Rescue Service and Foyle Search and Rescue Service.

Deputy Chief Constable Paul Leighton said: “The Police Service work with these very valuable voluntary organisations to carry out numerous fast and coordinated operations to help save peoples lives.

“In the last year, Police have called on the voluntary search and rescue services 145 times.  Such a high number of incidents highlight the necessity for these dedicated water borne rescue services.

“The four rescue boats that we have provided will be invaluable in terms of saving lives, and will provide reassurance to members of the community.”

Deputy Chief Constable Leighton added: “I want to pay tribute to those people who give up their time and play an active part in the running of community rescue services.  They do a tremendous job year in year out and deserve credit for their endeavours.”
