Operation Lockdown
17 Apr 2009
In January Police in South Belfast launched Operation Lockdown which focused on tackling burglaries, as well as anti-social behaviour and prolific offenders in the Lower Ormeau / Holyland area. The operation, which had been planned for some time, combined resources from the local crime team and other units and was based on intelligence provided by police analysts.
Officers actively sought and enforced bail conditions in an attempt to frustrate criminal activity as part of Operation Lockdown. High visibility patrols provided public reassurance, as well detecting and apprehending offenders in order to bring them before the courts.
The results show that over 1200 Vehicle Check Points were conducted, nine arrests made for burglary, as well as one arrest for Going Equipped for Theft, five arrests for breach of bail conditions and several arrests for drug offences and criminal damage during the six week period the operation ran.
While Operation Lockdown has now concluded, Police in South Belfast will continue to focus on tackling priorities such as burglaries, car crime and prolific offenders. Officers are also committed to robustly dealing with individuals whose behaviour is negatively affecting the quality of life of the entire community. However, we need everybody's help to be successful in this undertaking.
We welcome the support of our partner agencies, as well as of political and community representatives and would appeal to everybody in the community to contact police if they are aware of criminal behaviour in their area. If you witness any suspicious activity please call police on 0845 6008000 or contact Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
