Police in Craigavon will be using new powers to tackle motoring offences and anti-social behaviour over the summer months.

Chief Inspector Jason Murphy, Craigavon Area Commander explains: “New powers have been introduced that mean we can seize uninsured vehicles and vehicles causing alarm, distress or annoyance.  Not only will this target uninsured drivers, but it will also challenge the behaviour of those who are more likely to carry out motoring offences and criminals engaged in illegal activity.

“Nuisance vehicles including quad bikes, go-peds and mini-scooters being used anti-socially can also be seized whether being used on or off-road.  In addition, Police now have the power to enter private grounds to make the seizure.  Our message is clear.  Whether using these vehicles on or off-road, you will be detected, the vehicle will be seized on the spot and you will face the full rigour of the law,” Chief Inspector Murphy said.

Welcoming the new powers Craigavon DPP and Community Safety Partnership Chairperson Councillor Mairead O’Dowd said: "Nuisance vehicles, particularly motorbikes and quads, have long been a problem in the Craigavon area.  To escape the law, owners of these vehicles used them off road, with no regard for the public.  They endangered the safety of children playing on community green areas and of residents using civic parks, as well as creating nuisance and disruption for householders.  This new legislation will bring these vehicles within the law and this development represents a welcome relief for the people of the Borough.”
