Lisburn Police launch drink safety campaign
07 Dec 2009

Police in Lisburn are launching a campaign to highlight the dangers associated with Drink Spiking, as part of a joint initiative with Lisburn Community Safety Partnership – Safer Lisburn.
Posters offering tips for safety, along with a clear message to contact staff if customers suspect their drink has been tampered with, will feature in washrooms in entertainment venues across Lisburn.
While there is little evidence crimes linked to drink spiking are on the rise, the police and their partners are keen to tackle the perception that incidents are increasing and want to ensure the safety message is heard.
PSNI Sergeant Joann Gibson, Community Safety Unit in Lisburn, said, “This is a busy time of the year for socialising. We want Christmas revellers to have an enjoyable festive season, but everyone must be aware of their safety
“Drink spiking can lead to a victim being incapacitated and vulnerable to a robbery threat. Women should also be extra vigilant, as some of the drugs used are designed to lower resistance and reduce inhibitions, therefore leaving them susceptible to potential sexual abuse.
“I would also caution those who believe it is funny to drug their friends through drink spiking. It’s not, it is dangerous and a criminal offence.
“When in a bar, both men and women need to keep alert to their surroundings and ensure they do not give anyone an opportunity to spike their drink. By following a few simple rules, they can prevent themselves becoming victims.
“If you believe your drink has been spiked, please contact bar staff or door staff immediately.”
Supporting this initiative Jacqueline Crockett Safer Lisburn Community Safety Partnership, Communications Manager said: “This is an important campaign to raise awareness of the risks when we are out socializing. Drink spiking is dangerous and we all need to take the necessary steps to ensure that none of us become a victim of this type of crime”.
Scott McReynolds General Manager of the Point Bar stated "I am keen to support this campaign, the safety of my customers is paramount and I want everyone to feel safe while in the premises. This is not a problem we have encountered but raising awareness of the dangers is important. Bar and door staff are here to help and if you suspect your drink has been tampered with speak to them."
