Statement following Lundy Day Parade, Derry

05 Dec 2009

District Commander for G District Chief Superintendent Stephen Martin, welcomed the peaceful outcome to this afternoon's Lundy parade (Saturday 5 December).

He said: "Today’s parade has passed off extremely well and without major incident.  We were pleased and encouraged by the orderly and respectful way in which the event was conducted and marshalled.  This is testament to the dedicated work that has gone on behind the scenes by parade organisers, City Centre Management, local traders and community representatives.

Chief Superintendent Martin also reflected that in the past events such as this were marred by disorder and violence that followed in the evening.  “The majority of people within the Foyle area are law abiding citizens who are determined to live peaceful and productive lives, “he stated.  “I would remind those set on this type of disruption that they are only hurting their own community, a community that will not allow this type of behaviour to persist.

“I would encourage anyone who has any knowledge of planed disorder this evening or who becomes aware of disorder in their area to contact police at Strand Road immediately.”
