Burglaries in North and West Belfast
05 Feb 2009
Police in north and west Belfast are warning residents in the area to be on their guard after four males forced their way into the homes of two older people on the evening of Thursday 5 February and made off with sums of cash.
At around 6.35pm, four masked males forced their way into a house in the Stockman's Lane area of Belfast. The 79-year old male householder was left badly shaken and taken to hospital for a check-up.
At 7.05pm, four males, described as young and wearing black caps and cloths over their mouths, forced their way into an older man's house in Montreal Street, near Tennent Street in north Belfast. One was believed to be carrying a hook-like weapon. They made off with cash and documents and left in a small dark car. The victim in this case was also very shaken.
Superintendent Nigel Grimshaw, from Community Safety for 'A' District, said “We are investigating the possibility of a link. These are very similar incidents in similar circumstances. We are looking for four young masked males with scarves over their faces, dark clothing. We are also looking for a small, dark-coloured sports car.
I am very concerned. Three older people were subjected to horrendous attacks in their own homes, the places where they should feel safest.
The key to all of this is the community. This is a small city in a small country. We have a reputation for knowing each other so there must be somebody in the community that knows who is responsible for these despicable acts on the most vulnerable among us. I would appeal to them to think hard and come forward with any information they might have."
Police are appealing for anyone who has any information about either incident to contact them on 0845 600 8000. Alternatively, information may be given anonymously via the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
