Counterfeit note warning, Strabane
20 May 2009
Police are warning shops and businesses to be vigilant following a report of counterfeit notes being passed in the town. If in doubt, compare a suspect note to one that is known to be genuine as this can often help to determine the authenticity of a note.
It is a criminal offence to try to pass or keep a banknote that you either know or suspect to be counterfeit. If you inadvertently receive a note that you believe to be counterfeit, you should take it to the nearest police station as quickly as possible.
The counterfeit bank note should not be returned to the person passing it. If necessary a receipt should be issued to them. A description of the person passing the suspect currency should also be noted and your local police contacted straight away on 0845 600 8000.
The Crime Prevention Office has a limited number of detection pens available for retailers in the area. Please contact Strabane police station on 0845 600 8000 for further information.
