Serious crime searches and disorder, Strabane

22 May 2009

Police carried out a number of searches in the Ballycolman and Springhill Park areas in Strabane on Thursday (21 May) in relation to ongoing investigations into serious crime.  Police are investigating individuals suspected of running an illegal cigarette operation the proceeds of which are funding other criminal activity. A number of items were seized and taken away for further examination.

During the operation officers came under sustained attack from youths throwing stones, paint bombs and petrol bombs.

Commenting on the disorder Area Commander Chief Inspector Phil Marshall said it was incredibly concerning to see adults standing by while young people attacked officers and caused disruption within their own community.

"It is the job of the police to investigate criminal activity with the aim of making our streets and neighbourhoods safe for everyone. We need to be able to carry out our investigations without the risk of being seriously hurt as a result of unprovoked attacks.

"Four police vehicles were damaged as a result of the disorder. The costs of the repairs will have to come out of the local policing budget leaving less money to spend on normal policing matters such as neighbourhood policing, and addressing crimes like burglary and robbery.

"As the local commander I am more than disappointed in the lack of leadership and responsibility shown by the adults who stood by and watched while youths wrecked their own community and launched a sustained and violent attack on police officers."
