Police pilot community safety information screens
24 Nov 2009

The Police Service is piloting a new community safety initiative aimed at delivering important crime prevention messages to shoppers.
Supported by Castlereagh District Policing Partnership (DPP) and Castlereagh Community Safety Partnership (CSP), the digital display screens will convey community safety messages and appeals for information in Forestside Shopping Centre, Asda in Dundonald and Tesco at Newtownbreda. Customers in the stores will also receive safety messages via Bluetooth direct to their mobile phones.
Speaking at the launch Assistant Chief Constable Alistair Finlay said: “Messages about how to help prevent crime and police appeals for information are both relevant and important for everyone. The use of this technology will enable us to reach members of the community who may not engage with traditional media.”
Stephen Addley, Castlereagh CSP Manager, said: “We are pleased to be involved in a multi-agency approach aimed at reducing crime over the Christmas period. I would encourage everyone to check out the stands the next time they are out shopping.”
Supporting the event, Councillor Tommy Jeffers Castlereagh DPP Chairperson added: “Castlereagh District Policing Partnership supports the Police in their efforts to create a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone during the festive period.
“In addition to the many police measures in place, we would urge people to be vigilant and while preparing for the festive season it is important to remember that this is also a time of opportunity for criminals. We would remind people to lock all doors and windows and move valuables out of sight, particularly presents under the Christmas tree. We would advise retailers to think seriously about their security and check their premises regularly for anything suspicious. Don’t let criminals cash in on Christmas.”
