Police attacked, Armagh

Ten police officers have been injured during a serious disturbance on the Friary Road, Armagh.  Trouble started shortly after 2.00am this morning when a local police patrol was attacked outside the premises by a crowd estimated at over 150 people.  Police support was brought in from across the District.  During the trouble litter bins were used to smash the windows of police vehicles and officers were kicked and punched.  Four police vehicles had their windows, mirrors, lights and bodywork damaged.

As a result of the incident ten officers received cuts and bruising to their faces, upper bodies, backs and legs.  None of the injuries are believed to be serious.  Officers were forced to use CS spray during the incident due to the aggressive nature of the crowd and the need to protect themselves.

Calm was restored to the area at around 3am.

An investigation has commenced into the incident.  As part of that investigation Police will be examining CCTV footage from the area in a bid to identify those involved.

Two men, one aged 21 years and one aged 35 years, were arrested at the scene and are currently helping police with their enquiries.
