Police statement following east Belfast explosion

16 Oct 2009

Following an explosion in Kingsdale Park, east Belfast, Chief Superintendent Brian Maguire, Commander, B District, said:

“Around 7.30 this morning police received a report of an explosion in the Kingsdale area of east Belfast, close to the Kings Road.

A 38 years-old woman was injured in the explosion, she was driving the vehicle at the time, she was taken to hospital and she has since been discharged and her injuries are not life threatening.

Clearly our thoughts at this time are with the victim and indeed with her family.  I’d like to give some reassurance in that respect that our patrols there will continue as before in an appropriate and proportionate manner.

Initial investigations would indicate that some sort of device had been placed on or below a car.  The Army Technical Officer has confirmed that this was an explosive device.  We are investigating the possibility this was an under car booby trap device.  We are still trying to establish who the intended victim was and who carried out the attack.  The victim involved in this case was not a serving police officer and has not been a serving police officer.

We’re obviously very concerned for the victim and for her family.  Clearly there are people out there in today’s society who are still intent on causing murder and mayhem.

This attack, and those who carried it out, should be condemned.  Anyone who was in the area of Kingsdale Park and Kings Road between 6.30 last night and 7.30 this morning and saw anything untoward, please come forward and contact detectives at North Queen Street on 0845 600 8000.  Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.”
