River rescue, Coleraine

10 Oct 2009

A teenage girl has been rescued from the River Bann in Coleraine.  The teenager was seen to fall into the water from the town’s Sandelford Bridge around 12:25 pm on Friday October 9.  The girl who was pulled from the water a short time later has been conveyed to hospital for treatment.

Police have praised two members of the public, who assisted by members of a passing police patrol managed to bring the girl to safety.  Inspector Stephen McPeak said, “Everyone involved deserves great credit for the part they played in the rescue.  Particular praise must however go to one member of the public who showed great courage, by entering the cold and fast flowing river, without thought for his own safety, and who using a lifejacket he had in his car, was able to swim to the girl and save her life.  Had it not been for this man’s quick thinking and selfless actions, there is no doubt that we would be facing a tragedy here today.”
