Detectives appeal for information on car after Newtownhamilton bomb

23 Apr 2010

Detectives from the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch investigating a bomb attack at Newtownhamilton police station are making an appeal for witnesses.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Talbot, said the attack was a blatant disregard for life.

“The people responsible for this bomb ignored the fact that there could be passers by caught up in an explosion. As a result two people were injured when the device went off. Thankfully their physical injuries are not life threatening but one can only imagine how terrified they were.

Police officers were on their way to the scene when the device exploded. A number of properties surrounding the station were substantially damaged. We are also investigating shots being fired in the area prior to the explosion.

A robust and thorough investigation is underway to catch the criminals who abandoned this bomb outside Newtownhamilton police station, and I am making an appeal to the community of South Armagh to help us by coming forward and talking to the investigation team.

Anyone who was in the area before the explosion, or who noticed a white Toyota Corolla car approaching the police station or in the area of Newtownhamilton last night, is asked to contact detectives in Newry on 0845 600 8000. Alternatively information about this crime can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111” said the detective.
