Hijacking incident, West Belfast

05 Apr 2010

Detectives are appealing for information about a hijacking incident in West Belfast.

Shortly after 9am on Monday 5 April, it was reported that a Toyota Avensis taxi had been hijacked.

Initial enquiries suggest that the male driver had picked up two male passengers at Upper Dunmurry Lane.

When the car stopped at Norglen Parade the driver was told to hand over the keys to the vehicle.

It was then driven away by the thieves but found a short time later by the owner and a male friend at Beechfield Park. The two thieves were trying to change one of the car's tyres.

When the thieves were confronted, the owner's friend was struck in the chest with a screwdriver and the window of his Mondeo car broken in an unsuccessful attempt to steal the Mondeo car.

The thieves made their escape in the Avensis car, which was found abandoned at Upper Dunmurry Lane.

Neither of the men required hospital treatment.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

One of the thieves is described as approx 5ft 6 and the other was approx 6ft.
