Suspicious device, Newtownhamilton Police station - Update

14 Apr 2010

Army Technical Officers have made safe a viable device located on the rear seat of a silver coloured Peugeot 406 car which was abandoned at the gates to Newtownhamilton police station at around 2am this morning.  The device is understood to have consisted of a number of containers filled with flammable liquid.

The cordon at the scene has been reduced and families have been allowed to return to their homes.  A forensic examination of the scene is continuing.

Local Area Commander, Chief Inspector Sam Cordner has condemned those responsible and said, "Yet again these cowardly criminals have shown complete disregard for the safety of the people of South Armagh and for police officers who serve this community.”

He added, ‘My thanks go to the people of Newtownhamilton for their patience and support during this operation.  I would appeal to anyone in this community who has information about those responsible to speak to police on 0845 600 8000 or talk anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity by calling 0800 555 111.”
