Security alert, Crossmaglen

04 Apr 2010

A security alert in Crossmaglen has now ended.  Army Technical Officers have made safe a viable device located on the rear seat of a red Peugeot 406 car which was abandoned at the gates to the local police station at 10.45pm last night (Saturday 3 April).  The device is understood to have consisted of a number of containers filled with flammable liquid.

Local Area Commander, Chief Inspector Sam Cordner has condemned those who responsible and said: "Had this device exploded I have no doubt that anyone in the immediate area could have been killed or seriously injured.  Whoever is responsible showed complete disregard for the lives of police officers and members of the local community.  I would like to place on record my thanks to local people and their representatives for their patience and support during the operation to make this device safe "

He added: "Only by working together can local police and the people of Crossmaglen show these misguided individuals that incidents such as this have no place in today’s society."

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident or the Red Peugeot 406 car to contact detectives at Newry on 0845 600 8000.

Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity by calling 0800 555 111.
