Security alert, North Belfast

A security alert in north Belfast has ended. Army Technical Officers were tasked to examine a suspect device found in a hedge at Etna Drive shortly after 12.30 this afternoon. The object, decsribed as a pipe bomb type device was made safe by ATO following a controlled explosion. The device, described as viable, is believed to have been in situ for a considerable time.

Chief Inspector Andrew Freeburn, Area Commander commented, "I would like to thank local residents for their patience and support during this operation and would ask anyone with information to contact police on 0845 600 8000. Alternatively, information about crime can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity by calling 0800 555 111."

Roads around Etna Drive and Alliance Avenue have now reopened.
