Device under officer’s car Fearon Close Kilkeel

08 Aug 2010

Police in Newry have condemned at attack at the home of a serving police officer in Kilkeel as a cowardly and callous act.

A viable device, found under the car at a house in Fearon Close this morning, has been made safe by Army Technical Officers.

Superintendent Barbara Gray commented: “This was a focused and cowardly attack on the life of a police officer – an officer who works daily to protect her local community. This device was designed for one purpose – to kill and injure. We are fortunate that we are not dealing with a murder today.

“This attack was foiled due to the vigilance of this officer.

“The aim of these attacks is to disrupt and damage the service we provide. We will not be deterred from policing our communities and making them safer.

“While we welcome the comments of condemnation surrounding this incident, condemnation on its own is not enough. We need tangible support in the form of information if we are to bring those responsible before the courts. I would ask anyone with information to contact us in Newry on 0845 600 8000.
