‘Tread’ carefully this winter
27 Jan 2010

Police are urging motorists to check their tyres are safe and legal this winter.
Chief Inspector Diane Pennington explained that checking your tyres is quick and easy – and could save your life.
“Last year 115 people died on our roads. This represents a level of carnage that is unacceptable both to the police and the broader community. Many factors contribute to road traffic collisions, however defective tyres are one factor that can be prevented.
“Tyres can be the barrier between life and death, so it is important to make sure they are in good condition. Check your tyres now to see they meet the legal requirements, and don’t forget the spare. At least 3mm of tread is recommended for winter motoring, and certainly no less than 2mm. Some garages now provide free checks on tyres. A defective tyre could lead to a £60 fine and three penalty points on your licence.
“Remember, all that keeps you connected to the road is your tyres.”
