Chief Constable's statement on attempted murder, Antrim
08 Jan 2010
Commenting on this morning's attempted murder, Chief Constable Matt Baggott said,
"Our colleague was brutally targetted this morning in a cowardly attack as he left his home to travel to work.
He suffered critical injuries and is currently being treated in hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, his wife and his family at this very difficult and trying time.
I know that every decent person will join with me in condemning this attack and I can assure people across Northern Ireland that my colleagues will not be deterred from providing a first class impartial Police Service.
Officers and staff joined the Police Service to make a difference to the lives of others. They joined to protect and serve the entire community and to help build a peaceful Northern Ireland. This they do day in and day out.
The vast majority of people who have heard today's news have been horrified. Indeed, throughout the day I have received messages of support from across the world and all communities.
My appeal to everyone is that you continue to support us in building peace and to not let this incident detract us all from that goal. I would ask anyone with information to provide it to us.”
Anyone with information should contact police on 0845 600 8000. Alternatively members of the public can pass information anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
