Burglaries, Newry
06 Jan 2010
Detectives in Newry are appealing for information following two burglaries in the area last night Tuesday 5 January, the first of which occurred in Clanrye Avenue sometime between 9 and 9:30pm. The 81-year-old female resident of the house woke to see a male believed to be in his 70s, and two other males believed to be in their 20s, in her bedroom. The male in his 70s told the victim that if she gave them a small sum of money, they would go away. All three then left but it not clear whether money was taken. The victim was not injured during her ordeal but was shaken.
The second incident occurred in the Quarter Road area of Camlough at approximately 11:45pm. A 69-year-old male woke to find two males, one of whom was carrying a baseball bat, in his bedroom. The victim was ordered to sit down and was then struck with the baseball bat, before being kicked and punched. The victim then heard people in another room where a gun cabinet and safe were stored. It is believed two firearms were stolen. The victim was later taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries.
Detectives are investigating both incidents and would appeal to anyone who was in the area and who noticed any suspicious activity to contact them at Newry station on 0845 600 8000. Alternatively, information about crime can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity by calling 0800 555 111.
