Police officer is injured by car bomb in Randalstown, County Antrim
08 Jan 2010
A police officer has been seriously injured following an explosion under his vehicle on the Milltown Road of Randalstown early this morning Friday 8 January.
At a media facility at Antrim station Detective Chief Superintendent Derek Williamson said,
"We are facing a difficult start to the New Year. A 33 years old police officer is critically ill in hospital as a result of what we believe was a cowardly terrorist attack on not only that officer but on the community he served.
"At half past six this morning the constable travelled a short distance in his own private car on his way to work when an explosion occurred beneath the driver’s seat, leaving him critically ill.
"This is an attack on an officer who has almost ten years service with police, and this is an attack which we should all condemn.
"I would appeal for anyone in the area of Milltown Road in Antrim last night or who lives in the area and noticed anything suspicious or untoward to please contact police. We need the community’s help in order to bring whoever is responsible to justice.
"This is an officer who was very prominent in his own community. He is very well known and very well respected. He is also highly regarded by all his colleagues at Woodbourne Police Station in west Belfast.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0845 600 800 and ask for detectives."
