Disturbances, Broadway, Belfast

Four police vehicles have been damaged following rioting in the Broadway area of Belfast.

At around 8.15pm on Friday night, 2nd July, police received reports of youths gathering in the area.

Officers attending came under attack from crowds throwing bricks, bottles and petrol bombs. Vehicles were damaged however there were no reports of any injuries.

Missiles were also thrown between rival groupings and a number of people were also noted physically fighting at the roundabout.

One male was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. Another was arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour. Both were later released pending a report to the PPS.

Police remained in the area for several hours and again came under petrol bomb attack at around 12.10am. Missiles were also thrown at passing cars.

Officers patrolling in the Bog Meadows area also came under petrol bomb attack. A number of items believed to have been used in the making of petrol bombs were removed from the area by police.

Calm was restored at around 3.30am.

At the height of the disorder around 100 people are believed to have been involved. An investigation has now begun and police are appealing for witnesses.
