Motorists asked to slow down South Down
16 Jul 2010
South Down police are advising local drivers to slow down and obey the speed limit.
The advice comes as local police prepare to deploy the Camera Safety Van in the area.
Inspector Gary McClatchey, South Down Neighbourhood Policing Team, explained: "The activities of some drivers have been a concern for local people and police, particularly on coastal roads in the South Down area.
"In response to these concerns, police will be deploying the Camera Safety Van along coastal roads, including the A2 Narrow Water Carriageway between the Greenbank Roundabout, Newry, and the Mound Rd Roundabout, Warrenpoint.
"All right thinking and law-abiding motorists will realise that speed restrictions are not there to inconvenience them but to make our roads safer for everyone. Our aim is to prevent people from being seriously injured or killed in South Down . As speeding is considered one of the major causes in road traffic collisions we make no apology for adopting a tough approach to enforcement. All motorists have a duty to drive in a responsible manner, but if they do not, then we have a duty to detect and prosecute them."
