Armed robbery, Newry

Detectives in Newry, County Down, are investigating an armed robbery at Upper Water Street, during which a woman was injured.

At around 11.35pm on Sunday 6 June it was reported that a man had entered a gaming arcade.

The man, who was armed with a handgun, demanded cash from a member of staff.

The female member of staff, who is aged in her 40s, was shot by the man to the stomach.

He made his escape empty-handed on foot towards North Street or High Street.

The woman was taken to hospital with injuries which were understood to be serious but not life-threatening.

The circumstances of the incident are still being established.

A man was arrested.

Police responded to the area immediately. A number of detectives are carrying active and ongoing enquiries.
