Police officers injured, South Armagh
29 Jun 2010
Two police officers have been injured following an incident in South Armagh on Tuesday 29 June.
PSNI officers were assisting with a HMRC operation targeting what we believe to be illegal cigarettes. The two officers sustained injuries when a vehicle failed to stop in the Low Road area just before 1pm. They were taken to hospital for treatment. One of the officers remains in a serious but stable condition at this stage and the other officer has since been discharged from hospital.
Two males, aged 17 and 39, have been arrested and are currently helping police with their inquiries.
Speaking at a press conference, Inspector Davy Beck said: " I would like to take this opportunity to commend the bravery and dedication of the officers involved and our thoughts are with them and their families at this time.
"These officers were there doing their utmost to prevent and tackle crime but unfortunately those involved were prepared to kill them in order to make their escape. Their actions are in sharp contrast to the actions of these officers.
"Officers commit themselves daily to working in the community to make Northern Ireland a safer place. Policing is not a risk-free environment and unfortunately it is often the case that we have to put ourselves in harms way in order to protect the public."
Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact them at Newry on 0845 600 8000. Alternatively, information about crime can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity by calling 0800 555 111.
