North West 200 races, police thank residents and spectators
17 May 2010
Police would like to thank local people and spectators for their patience and co-operation during the week of the North West 200 motorcyclist races on the North Coast.
Before the event we asked that those attending made sure that they had a great weekend by playing their part towards a safe and enjoyable week for as many people as possible.
Police, who liaised closely with the organisers and partner organisations in preparation for the event, maintained a presence in the area throughout to help ensure that spectators could have an enjoyable time, and could so in a safe environment.
Unfortunately, on the afternoon of Saturday 15 May police attended an incident where a man in his 20s was injured after he fell onto rocks close to Ballyreagh Road, Portrush. Police gave CPR to the man before he was airlifted to a Belfast hospital with a critical injury.
Police publicly stated ahead of the event that officers would deal robustly with anyone found to be causing a danger or nuisance to others.
To this end, a number of people were arrested throughout the day and evening on Saturday for offences such as disorderly behaviour, indecent behaviour and motoring offences.
Police also seized quantities of alcohol and a number of people have been reported to the council for on-street drinking. Officers also spoke to a number of people in relation to rowdy behaviour.
The day passed off successfully with the vast majority of spectators enjoying a safe day out.
