A security alert in the Springhill Park area of Strabane ended shortly after 5pm on Thursday, 27 May, and the remains of a viable device have been recovered.
The alert began at 11.30am on Thursday morning following a report of a suspicious object. It is believed that the device was thrown at a house in the area some time overnight and exploded. Damage was caused to the door of the house which was unoccupied at the time.
Army Technical Officers attended and the remains of the device were taken away for forensic examination.
A number of homes were evacuated during the alert.
Area Commander Chief Inspector Andy Lemon said: "I completely condemn this mindless attack. This device could have caused serious harm or injury to any member of this community and this cannot be tolerated. The entire community has been disrupted today and families have been forced to leave their homes. There is no place for attacks of this nature in our society.
