Distraction burglaries, North and West Belfast

29 Sep 2010

Detectives are investigating two distraction burglaries in North and West Belfast.

The first was reported to police at around 8.15pm on Tuesday night, 28th September. Two males called at a property at Dover Walk claiming to represent a gas company.

The males persuaded the elderly female householder to let them in. Once inside the pair began to search through cupboards.

The householder, realising the males were not who they claimed, began to scream and the males ran off.

The second burglary occurred in the Andersonstown Park area at around 8.40pm. A male called at the home of an elderly female claiming to represent the electricity board. While this male attempted to distract the householder in the kitchen, a second male was spotted on the stairs. Both men then made off.

It's believed the culprits, one of whom spoke with an English accent, made off empty handed on both occasions.

Detectives are also investigating reports of suspicious callers at a number of other properties in the same areas on Tuesday night. Anyone with information relating to the burglaries or anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in either area is asked to contact the CID offices on 0845 600 8000.

Alternatively information about crime can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
