Terrorism charges, Newry

27 Sep 2010

A 54-year-old man arrested in the Newry area of County Down has been charged with possession of articles likely to be of use to terrorists, preparation of terrorist acts, possession of firearms with intent to endanger life, possession of firearms and ammunition in suspicious circumstances, possession of a prohibited weapon and conversion of weapons not being the holder of a firearms dealers' certificate.

He is expected to appear at Newry Magistrates court on Monday 27 September.

The charges follow a significant firearms find, linked to current dissident Republican activity, by officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's Serious Crime Branch.

As is usual procedure the charges are subject to review by the Public Prosecution Service.
