Statement of DCI Gareth Talbot following Tariff Setting for Lindsey White

23 Mar 2012

Marek Muszynski was a 40 year old Polish national who came to Northern Ireland in search of a better life.

Tragically, his life was taken from him in a laneway at Upper Edward Street in Newry in July 2009 in an unprovoked, violent and sustained attack.

Earlier this year 20 year old Adrian Cunningham was sentenced to a minimum of 11 years in prison for his part in the attack after previously pleading guilty.

Today Lindsey White has been sentenced to at least 14 years in jail after being convicted of Marek’s murder.

Marek was a totally innocent victim.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the local community whose information and co-operation enabled detectives to bring this case to a successful conclusion.

CCTV images we have released today show White and Cunningham casually walking away from the scene minutes after the attack on their way to get a takeaway meal having taken Marek’s last 70p from his pocket. Newry is undoubtedly a safer place today now these two killers are behind bars. We will do our utmost to protect members of all communities and all nationalities in Northern Ireland.

Our thoughts today are with Marek’s family in Poland who were unable to travel to Northern Ireland. Hopefully, today’s sentencing will provide them with a small degree of comfort after this senseless attack on their innocent loved one so many miles from home.
