Murder of Eamonn Hughes, Dungannon
19 Sep 2008
Detectives investigating the murder of 48-year-old Eamonn Hughes in Dungannon are returning to the scene this evening – exactly a week after the attack – in a bid to gather more information about what happened.
Mr Hughes was stabbed in the Lisnahull area of the town as he made his way home from a family birthday party in the early hours of last Saturday morning.
Two women were also injured when a car struck them. In a related incident a short time later, a man sustained injuries inflicted by a crossbow bolt to his arm.
Six men have appeared in court on charges connected to the murder but the officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Ricky Harkness, has warned people in the Lisnahull and Ponderosa areas of Dungannon not to become complacent.
DCI Harkness said: “Thanks to a combination of good police work and community assistance, six men have already appeared in court. But that does not mean that this investigation is over – far from it.
“Police believe a number of individuals were involved. We believe that although many people have come forward with information, there are still others who may be able to assist us with the investigation. We need as full a picture as possible so that we can put all the available evidence before a court to secure convictions.
“That is why we will be back at the scene this evening, mounting vehicle checkpoints, distributing leaflets and talking to local people to make sure we collect every possible piece of information in this case. Eamonn Hughes and his family deserve nothing less.
“I would ask anyone in the area who knows anything about what happened, before or after Eamonn Hughes was stabbed, to come and talk to us. They can either contact police in Dungannon on 028 8775 0533 or give information anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.”
