Attempted murder of police officers in Lisnaskea
23 Aug 2008
Police investigating the attempted murder of three officers in Lisnaskea on Saturday 16 August are making a renewed appeal for assistance from the local community one week after the attack.
The move is being backed by local political representatives who attended an appeal facility in the village on Saturday 23 August.
Fermanagh Area Commander, Chief Inspector Alwyn Barton, said the improvised rocket attack on Main Street in which three neighbourhood officers escaped serious injury deserved to be condemned by everyone in the community as a crude and reckless attack on the entire community – police and civilians.
Chief Inspector Barton said: “We need to catch those who did this and we need active community involvement to achieve this.
“The threat comes from a small group of individuals who have little or no support. These so-called dissidents must see clearly that the people of this country have made the choice to support law and order; to support safety and security and to support those men and women who put on the police uniform to deliver that safety and security.
“We need local people to come forward with information which will help us, help us to put these individuals behind bars and make the community safer for everyone.”
Police are making a number of specific appeals. They want to hear from:
· Anyone who was in Lisnaskea between 10pm and 11.15pm on the night of the incident and who saw a white Ford Escort car, with black bumpers and five doors, which was used by the gang.
· Anyone who saw the attack taking place in Main Street shortly after 11pm.
· Anyone who saw the white Escort car being burned out at Knocks Road a short time later or who saw people on foot in this area.
Members of the public who can help should contact police on 0845 600 8000, alternatively information about crime can be passed anonymously on 0800 555 111.
