Murder of Emmett Shiels in County Londonderry

26 Jun 2008

Detectives from the PSNI Major Investigation Team investigating the death of Emmet Shiels in the Creggan area of County Londonderry have charged an 18 years old man with his murder.

An 18 years old woman has been charged with perverting the course of justice in relation to the case.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Frankie Taylor, said there are others who should talk to police:

“There were other individuals involved. We need to speak to them. These people know who they are. They should do the right thing and come forward to police. It's the right thing to do for them, for Emmett's family and for the community.

“Emmett Shiels was an entirely innocent man and did nothing to justify being murdered, if there ever is justification for murder,” said the detective.

Mr Shiels, who was 22 years old was shot dead on Tuesday June 24 2008.

He was driving his delivery van towards Blighs Lane at 1am when he came across a group of males. He got out of his van to speak to them, and was shot. He was taken to hospital by ambulance but later died.
