Police rescue woman from Newry canal

A woman was taken to hospital after being rescued from Newry canal by two police officers on Saturday morning, 31st July.

Police were made aware of a woman in the canal at Merchants Quay at around 3.45am. Responding officers jumped into the water and brought the woman back to the canal bank where ambulance staff were waiting.

The woman is not believed to have sustained any serious injuries.

Area Commander Chief Inspector Sam Cordner has commended the officers involved, "The swift actions of the two local response officers undoubtedly saved this woman's life. Their bravery should serve as an example to all of us and underlines the kind of commitment all local officers have to providing a first class emergency service to the people of Newry."
