GENERAL - Advice on personal security whilst driving
17 Jan 2012
In relation to recent incidents of car hijacking Police would continue to encourage drivers to be vigilant of personal security while driving.
On your journey
When driving, keep doors locked and keep valuables such as laptops or handbags out of view.
Never pick up hitchhikers or give lifts to strangers.
Plan your route and take a map to avoid asking strangers for directions.
If you are forced to stop abruptly, keep your engine running and make sure you have enough room to drive away.
You MUST stop for the police but it's quite reasonable to ask for identification through a closed window and keep the engine running until you are satisfied.
Beware of anyone who tries to signal that there's something wrong with your car, unless you know they're right and it is dangerous to drive on.
If a driver gets out and approaches you and you have concerns about their behaviour, flash your lights and sound your horn. If you have an alarm, set it off.
When Parking
Wait until you're close to the car before unlocking it, and if the car design allows it, unlock the driver's door only.
If you park on the street choose a busy, well-lit place, and have your car keys ready as you return to the car.
