Firearms incident, Powerscourt Place, South Belfast

Two men have been arrested following this morning's incident in the Powerscourt Place area of South Belfast (Thursday 21 May) and a suspected firearm removed for further examination.

District Commander for South and East Belfast Brian Maguire said the police operation was aimed at protecting the whole community.

"I would like to thank local residents for their patience and co-operation. We regret any inconvenience caused - however - our priority was the safety of the community.

"I would also pay tribute to the professionalism of the highly trained officers, including negotiators, who skilfully brought this dangerous and complex situation to a successful conclusion."

The two men aged 25 and 28 were later charged with a number of offences, appeared in court and remanded on bail.
